Acoustic

THE ACOUSTIC DESIGN OF TAIPEI 101, ONE OF THE WORLD'S TALLEST SKYSCRAPERS, IS A CRITICAL ASPECT OF CREATING A COMFORTABLE AND FUNCTIONAL INDOOR ENVIRONMENT.

Acoustic

SOUND INSULATION: Due to its height and location in a bustling urban area, sound insulation is crucial to prevent external noise from penetrating the building. High-quality insulation materials, such as double-glazed windows, are used to reduce sound transmission.

*Due to the absence of direct contact between the panes, soundwaves are dampened, resulting in a significantly quieter indoor environment. Double glazed windows have the potential to reduce sound levels by up to 31 dBA. However, they may not achieve complete soundproofing.

INTERIOR ACOUSTICS: Inside the building, measures are taken to control and optimize acoustics in various spaces. This is important for office areas, public spaces, and other areas where people congregate. Acoustic ceiling tiles, wall treatments, and carpeting may be used to reduce noise and improve speech intelligibility.

SOUNDPROOFING: Taipei 101 uses soundproofing techniques in its design to minimize noise transmission between floors, rooms, and areas. This is especially important in a mixed-use skyscraper where commercial offices, retail spaces, and observation decks coexist. Taipei 101 applied the the glass soundproof doors that utilize a double-sealed structure, allowing meetings to take place in a calm setting while maintaining the confidentiality of discussions. This setup allows for a productive and secure atmosphere for significant business discussions and collaborations.

LEARN FROM LEEDS V4.1 ACOUSTIC PERPORMANCE:

Sound Transmission

Meet the composite sound transmission class (STCc) ratings listed in Table 1, or the local building code, whichever is more stringent.

Reverberation Time

Meet the reverberation time requirements in Table 2. Specific reverberation time requirements may be established for different types of spaces, such as classrooms, offices, and conference rooms, to ensure appropriate acoustics for each environment.

Considering Taipei 101's mixed-use occupancy, encompassing office and retail spaces, the assessment of acoustic performance must take into account the distinct usage characteristics of both office and retail environments.

As a three-time LEED Platinum certified tower, Taipei 101 undoubtedly meets the minimum composite sound transmission class ratings for adjacent spaces and reverberation time requirements specified in the LEED acoustic performance standards.

Also, to ensure optimal acoustic performance, LEED v4.1 mandates that background noise levels in regularly occupied spaces should not surpass 40 dBA during the day and 35 dBA at night, as per the ANSI/ASA S12.2 standard.

HVAC NOISE CONTROL: The building's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are designed to operate quietly to avoid disturbing occupants. Noise control measures, such as acoustic enclosures and silencers, are used in the HVAC infrastructure.

  • Enclosures: reduce noise by offering outdoor soundproofing.

  • Silencers: When sound waves hit air pockets, the molecules are bashed together and the energy is turned from sound to heat, which reduce the noise production.

OCCUPANT COMFORT: Ensuring a comfortable acoustic environment is essential for occupant well-being. In office spaces, for example, acoustic considerations are important to minimize distractions and promote productivity.

• The acoustic design of Taipei 101 is multifaceted, taking into account both the interior comfort of occupants and the need to shield against external noise. Creating a well-balanced acoustic environment in a skyscraper of this magnitude is essential for the well-being of its occupants and visitors.

In case Taipei 101 is comply with the LEED standard, the background soud level will then be defined as faint or moderate. The receptor acoustic comfort will be relatively high.
